Yeah, I know the original iMac wasn't very upgradable and they sold a lot. I sold a few for Apple. What worries me is the general trend. It seems that Apple likes nonupgradable machines now. Just as they didn't like clones. G3s were very upgradeable with the ziff sockets, but as we go along it seems the processors are almost one offs in terms of cache and configurations. That's why there's nothing for my 350 G4 except a very expensive dual card. It's a drag. My 8500 is a 292 G3 now and I could probably upgrade it to a 500 G3 with not much money. I bought my G4 because of firewire and the 100mhz buss but it's a relative turtle, and was even when new. I doubt many of the newer G4s will be upgradable. So it's the trend that bothers me personally not the individual cases and not how it relates to the stock price. Except in that I'm a professional user, and other professional users are frustrated by Apples seeming inability to pay attention to us and to keep up with the Gateses. Less professionals means more web designers design for Explorer on the PC and screw everyone else and THAT will be the thing that hurts Apple. I constantly run into sites that aren't designed for cross platfor stuff, even Mac sites. I think the new iMacs are really nice machines and as long as they keep a cheapo CRT in the lineup they'll both sell the high end machines and introduce new low end users to the platform. I know low enders don't swap hard drives and that's OK who cares, but low end learners become high end professional sometimes. Who wants to spend 1299 on a machine that will be obsolete by the time you learn Photoshop? Much better to spend 699 on a cheap machine and save for the day you start making money. I'm still thinking about getting a faster Mac but it'll depend on how fast they can get them out and if I still have the cash when they come out. With this recession it may be the last chance I get to upgrade until the recession/depression is over. I may just upgrade my PC instead, as much as I hate Microsofts OSs money is my goal, and there is more in the intel world.
