Gibbons credits lead poisoning and slothful living for the decline of the empire among other things. Also Christianity. But this does not explain it. Lead did not get into the water of Italy because the pipes formed magnic scale fast. Also the Romans were Christian and so were their enemies at the end. It was more likely overextension of the empire and education of the armies and peoples who would overcome them. A lesson here is not to teach enemies how to fight or work. And keep your empires small.

My empire is 8 X 10.
