That surprising. They had uzis since the 50s and they also started to produce Galils about that time (1973). I suppose Galils were not in common use yet and for long range the older rifle was better then a submachine gun like the Uzi. Before the assault rifles (Galils or M-16s) the Israeli army was probably equipped like the US army was in WWII with some soldier having bolt action or semi auto rifles for long range effect and others having submachine guns for greater firepower.
