U.S. Robotics and Analog Devices to Develop Next-Generation ADSL Modems
U.S. Robotics USB ADSL Modem to be Introduced at Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas
LAS VEGAS--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 8, 2002--U.S. Robotics, the world's leading provider in Internet access and connectivity, today announced a strategic partnership with Analog Devices Inc. (NYSE:ADI - news), a global leader in high-performance semiconductors for signal-processing applications such as broadband access, to develop a suite of ADSL modems for general consumers and small office/home office (SOHO) users in the Americas and Western European markets seeking broadband Internet access.
The modems will feature Analog Devices' Eagle(TM) xDSL chipset as well as new software tools allowing easier consumer installation, enhanced security and remote troubleshooting by service providers. The first modem in the line features Universal Serial Bus (USB) technology and is being introduced this week by U.S. Robotics at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
U.S. Robotics is located in suite N230 at the Las Vegas Convention Center. The product is expected to ship in second quarter 2002.
``With ADI's established presence in the DSL market and U.S. Robotics' well-known and trusted consumer brand, we are in a great position to offer compelling features and benefits for both the service provider and consumer,'' said Tom Pryzgoda, director of marketing for U.S. Robotics, based in Schaumburg, Ill.
``Our extensive distribution channels and ADI's telecom relationships will allow us to effectively facilitate mass broadband deployment.''
``Through our agreement with U.S. Robotics, ADI can offer DSL service providers customer premise equipment that is interoperable with all leading ADSL servers and supported by a widely regarded retail brand,'' said Vic Jayasimha, director of broadband marketing for Analog Devices.
U.S. Robotics evaluated all the major DSL silicon manufacturers and found Analog Devices had the best balance of cost competitiveness, quality, performance and a forward-looking chipset roadmap, according to Jim Thomsen, DSL modem product manager for U.S. Robotics.
``Working with a single, high-quality chipset provider enables standardization and more efficient product cycles, allowing U.S. Robotics to develop new features and software updates which can be distributed across the entire product line,'' Thomsen said.
``The suite of modems will feature new software tools allowing easier consumer installation, ability to seamlessly upgrade, enhanced security, diagnostics and connection monitoring,'' Thomsen said. ``This translates to lower support and deployment costs to the service provider while at the same time improving the customer's Internet experience.''
U.S. Robotics USB ADSL Modem, the first modem stemming from the agreement, offers consumers a continuous connection to the World Wide Web. By allowing for Internet connectivity up to 145 times faster than 56K analog connections, the USB ADSL Modem offers users access to high-speed Internet applications such as interactive gaming, telecommuting, and on-demand streaming audio and video entertainment.
Models for both plain old telephone service (POTS), geared mostly for North and South America, and ISDN, designed mostly for Western Europe, are expected to ship in April 2002.
