True enough that there are many more Chinese than Italians. But if there are 22 Chinese for every Italian but the two economies are roughly equal in terms of GNP, etc., then it must also be the case that each Italian has the buying power of 22 Chinese. There's a difference between "demand" and "effective demand." Please, I know this is simplistic. An Italian is not going to buy 22 cell phones just because he has a larger income than your average Chinese. But I still wonder about labeling the Chinese market as "huge" just because of their huge population without taking into account the wealth of the economy.
