1. Call To Action
Last January 17th, the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security
Cooperation opened its doors. We were told it was a new school, with a
new mission, new instructors and a new curriculum.
In the past year countless children, women and men have been forced into
exile or made refugees in their own country. Union organizers, student
activists and others working in solidarity with the poor have been
assassinated. Across Latin America, thousands continue to suffer rape,
torture, murder, disappearance and arbitrary detention at the hands of
SOA graduates and their cohorts in the paramilitaries.
Please tell your Member of Congress to join the 90+ current co-sponsors
of HR 1810, by adding his/her support to the bill to close the WHISC.
Ask him/her to co-sponsor the bill. One year has passed, and nothing
has changed. The truth cannot be silenced. Now is the time to close the
WHISC!

2. What You Can Do
*Between now and January 31: Meet with your Member of Congress (MOC)
when s/he is in the home district You should call ASAP to make an
appointment.
*On January 17: Call your Member of Congress, both at their district
office and their Washington, DC office.
*Before January 17th: Send her/him a postcard or email message at the US
Capitol.

*Contact your congress member even if s/he has already co-sponsored. It
is very important that we let our friends know how much we appreciate
their support. If your MOC is already a co-sponsor, thank them for
their support and ask them to talk to their peers and help gather
co-sponsors for this important bill.

There is a new list posted on the SOAW website of representatives who
have supported closing the SOA in the past but have not yet co-sponsored
HR 1810. This may be a good place to start with your lobbying work.
