I am, Jorj, an expert on absolutely NOTHING .... hehehehe

that being said, bout the candy canes ...

I purchased three hundred boxes of nine count
small Christmas candy canes
from one of the local discount stores FOUR years ago ...
matter of fact, just about this time of year ....
as
they had been marked down to 25cents per box from 99cents, and I made an offer to the store manager for a dime a box and I'd take them all....

I knew they'd keep nicely for a year , and even two ....
I gave plenty of cane packages to several of the local churches and schools to put up as decorations for the next two years ....

however, I found twenty or so boxes that I'd missed in the storage room right before Christmas THIS year .....
there was a "slight" loss of taste ... less sweet, and sure nuff, the pure white portion had yellowed some ...turned actually kinda cream colored ....

I gave them to one of the local charity places that feeds folks daily ....
they were a big hit ...
and nobody there even knew the canes were at least 4 years old ...... gggggggggg

BUT
in Texas, the main enemy is humidity ... and I'd had them stored in a climate controlled place ..
heat never above 90 and never below 40 with humidity not to exceed 50 percent ......

and
as I said ....
I'm NOT an expert on NOTHING

cept for horses and futures ...... hehehehe
