Maybe the two carriers subsidize the heck out the handsets, but if they are, that has no impact on royalties or chipset prices.

i would guess so. i just have a hard time understanding how they could make any money at those prices, since it is difficult to believe they have ARPUs of $40-$50, or more than 10% of per capita GDP. then again, carriers don't make any money here, either.
