Reuters, 01.09.02, 2:36 AM ET

FRANKFURT, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Shares in SAP AG <SAPG.DE> rose over three percent in pre-market trade on the Instinet electronic platform after Europe's biggest software company reported fourth quarter results which beat market forecasts.

SAP said licence sales, the basic measure of how much software it sold, were expected to exceed one billion euros ($891.3 million) in the fourth quarter, well above analyst forecasts of some 781 million.

It said it expected total revenues in 2001 to have grown by more than 16 percent, with operating margins excluding the costs of stock-related compensation programmes and acquisition-related charges to match the 20 percent achieved in 2000.

The company had been due to report full year results on January 23.
