So, pray tell....why have short-term rates for silver leases gone ballistic while long-term rates have been relatively unaffected?

Because it's a British Pound Futures-Currency create backwardation. Plot the silver versus pound since oct 2001. You have about 3-5 days more before the trend will break, and the forwards hedge will plateau. Then it's become cost effective to spread the risk to higher silver lease terms. This is all due to speculation based around the introduction of the Euro Currency, and the entry of the pound {see OLE post of weeks ago referring to the pound entry level}
