Korea,Japan Agree to Cooperate on 4G Phone

By Kim Deok-hyun
Staff Reporter

Korea and Japan have agreed to cooperate in establishing the fourth- generation (4G)
mobile phone network between the two countries.

The agreement was reached in a meeting yesterday between Information and
Communication Minister Yang Seung-taik and visiting Japanese Home Affairs Minister
Toranosuke Katayama.

Under the agreement, the two countries will form a working forum to develop the
futuristic telecommunications technology and its standardization this year.

The forum is designed to promote research and development of faster, more powerful
mobile phones on which users could watch movies, officials said.

Fourth-generation mobile phones would be capable of instant video downloads, among
other functions, experts said.

Also on the agenda was comprehensive cooperation in high-speed Internet and
e-commerce policies.

Ahead of the upcoming 2002 World Cup finals, which South Korea and Japan will
co-host from May through June, the two countries will launch a trial operation of
high-speed satellite communications service.

In a bid to bring regional solidarity to Asian countries in the development of
next-generation Internet platform, electronic signature and online authentication, the
government also said the second Asian information-technology ministers' forum would
be held in Seoul during the World Cup finals.
