Microsoft is Reportedly Eyeing CBS

NEW YORK (Reuter) - Microsoft Corp. is reviewing the finances of Westinghouse Electric Corp."s CBS unit as it considers making a bid to buy the network, the New York Post reported Tuesday. The newspaper, quoting sources close to the situation, said four Microsoft executives were reviewing CBS finances. Neither Microsoft nor CBS was immediately
available to comment, but the Post quoted sources close to CBS as saying the company was not for sale. The newspaper said Microsoft, the world"s biggest computer software company, viewed CBS as a valuable weapon in its battle with broadcasters as they seek to define the future of digital television. The newspaper also reported that Seagram Co. Ltd. ``is also said to be looking at CBS."" Seagram owns Universal Studios. The Microsoft and Seagram interest in CBS was said to be preliminary and it was not clear if offers would be made, the Post said. Microsoft, Seagram and Westinghouse were quoted as declining to comment.
