It is much more complicated than that. When I viewed the Democratic Presidential debates in '92, among Clinton and Harkin and Tsongas and Brown, Clinton seemed closest to me on the issues. However, there was something shifty in his demeanor, and I did not trust his character. On the other hand, Tom Harkin was the furthest from me politically, but seemed to me to be a person of integrity. Now, if "trust" referred solely to character, I would say I trusted Harkin. But if it includes having confidence in his opinions, obviously I did not, we were politically too far apart.
By the way, hardly anyone in Washington trusted Clinton. He was notorious on Capitol Hill for being a liar whose word was worthless, not only among conservatives, but among liberals too....... |
