>> Metawave Deploys GSM Smart Antennas In China

Cellular News
9th January 2002

Metawave has announced the results of its successful GSM smart antenna cluster deployment in Guangzhou, one of China Unicom's largest wireless markets with over five million subscribers.

In September 2001, SpotLight GSM systems were installed in two sectors of one site and one sector of a second site in the urban core of the Guangzhou network. SpotLight GSM enabled Guangzhou Unicom to reduce busy hour dropped call rates by as much as 35%, indicating significant signal improvement. This performance improvement was achieved despite busy hour traffic increases of up to 45% compared to baseline. In addition to the benefits realized at the smart-antenna-equipped sites, SpotLight GSM decreased dropped calls by as much as 40% in adjacent sites while maintaining their baseline traffic loading.

As an add-on or applique, SpotLight GSM connects to the receive and transmit ports of GSM base stations through RF cable connections. The key to capacity and performance benefits lie in the systems ability to reduce interference conditions in the network. By reducing interference, SpotLight GSM allows operators to accommodate more minutes of use and to significantly reduce dropped calls. <<
