There were members of the Taleban fighting against Russia, they just weren't called the Taleban then. Lots of US weapons used to fight against Russia fell into Taleban hands and have since been used against US forces. Admittedly, I might be stretching a point by saying "backed", perhaps I should have used the word "aided", albeit some of the aid was indirect. Thanks for spotting my error.
