Friday October 26 - Atacama Comments on Recent Positive Industry Developments
VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA--Atacama Minerals Corp.'s President and C.E.O., Richard P. Clark, issued the following comment today regarding the acquisition by Potash Corp. of Saskatchewan (``PCS'') of 18% of the outstanding shares of Sociedad Quimica y Minera de Chile S.A. (``SQM'').
``PCS's acquisition of a significant stake in our neighbours in Chile confirms the importance of Chilean product in the international fertilizer and industrial minerals marketplace and follows closely upon Norsk Hydro's recent increased interest in SQM. SQM produces potassium and sodium nitrate, lithium, iodine and other industrial mineral products. Like SQM, Atacama is a significant producer of iodine and upon achieving full production over the next two years, Atacama will move towards being a world class supplier of nitrates and sulphates as well.''
PCS's US$129 million acquisition makes them one of the largest shareholders of SQM. PCS, headquartered in Saskatchewan, Canada, is the world's largest fertilizer enterprise.
ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD
Richard P. Clark, President
