1/09/02 - JDS Uniphase upbeat on future despite 'very difficult present'

SAN FRANCISCO, Jan 09, 2002 (AFX-Europe via COMTEX) -- JDS Uniphase chief financial officer Anthony Muller said the company has a "very bright future" despite a "very difficult present," in the struggling market for telecommunications equipment, the Wall Street Journal reported in its online edition.
"Customers are still working through inventories that are higher than they'd like to have them," and, as a result, JDS is not receiving repetitive orders, Muller told investors at a Salomon Smith Barney conference.

The optical components company declined to affirm or comment on its earlier financial projections, but did mention that it had expected sales to fall between 10 pct and 15 pct in the quarter ended in December, and again in the March quarter.

The company said it now expects it will not need sales of 350 mln usd a quarter to break even.
