Dr. Jacobs has been carefully crafting his words about the commercial availablity of CDMA2000 for the better part of 2 years now. It's finally going to be commercially deployed in 2002 here in the US.

Nextel International has plenty of iDEN spectrum throughout China. To my knowledge, they have not deployed any of their licenses in China at this point. The first big step might be for nextel to commercialize an iDEN network in Beijing before we get jazzed about making international direct connect conversations.

Making free international phone calls is going to meet a tad of resistance from politicians on every side of the issue. Look at what happened in India as politicians restricted WLL service for domestic phone use. 95% of all revenues from international calls have to be repaid to other agenices.

I am very excited about the Nextel's decision to depart from GSM upgrade paths and to embrace CDMA. The integration of Direct Connect and Q Chat is an amazing synergy too. The possiblity of making a Direct Connect conversation between Boston and Beijing is patently ridiculous, based on currnet telcom regulations.
