somehow I would guess that there is an ulterior motive that goes beyond good and welfare and it may relate to ALL-IP RANs of the future that will support multiple air interfaces.

Maybe....but the motive could be to simply try and get W-CDMA working well as quickly as possible. The handsets that Docomo is selling have absolutely terrible standby times (55 hours). I think they expect to get to 100 hours by the end of this year....which still is probably subpar in markets that are used to 200+ hours of standby.

I believe that Nokia addressed this point and said they would have standby and talk times that are similair to 2G handsets. I certainly hope so....a switch to synchronous W-CDMA would probably take some time.
