04:17 PM DJ Merrill/Ching -2: Communications Gear Coverage Revamped By Johnathan Burns

Of DOW JONES NEWSWIRES

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--Merrill Lynch & Co. (MER) communications equipment analyst Michael Ching has left the firm "to focus on the needs of his family," the company said Wednesday.

Ching, who covered such companies as communications equipment giant Lucent Technologies Inc. (LU) and wireless technology innovator Qualcomm Inc. (QCOM), joined the firm in April 1994, a Merrill Lynch spokeswoman said.

In the wake of Ching's departure, Merrill Lynch has restructured coverage of the communications equipment group.

Tom Astle will take on the role as global coordinator for communication equipment research. Sam Wilson will take primary responsibility for coverage of the networking and datacom sector, which includes companies like Cisco Systems Inc. (CSC) and Juniper Networks Inc. (JNPR), among others.

Alex Schutze, currently based in London, will move to New York and pick up coverage of wireless equipment stocks, including Qualcomm and Motorola Corp. ( MOT).

Tal Liani, who currently covers cable equipment maker Scientific-Atlanta Inc. (SFA) and Comverse Technology Inc. (CMVT), will assume coverage of Lucent, Tellabs Inc. (TLAB) and Ciena Corp. (CIEN).

Meanwhile, Astle will continue coverage of the optical equipment space, including Nortel Networks Corp. (NT), Agere Systems Inc. (AGRA) and JDS Uniphase Corp. (JDSU), while his team adds coverage of companies in the telecommunications test equipment space.
