stribe, As usual I stir the pot, but I have observed this behavious in quite a few people. privately they do not believe, publicly they are devout.
In small towns with more intense scrutiny there is more religious uniformity and a higher rate of attendance.
In cities, a lot smaller.
The basic measure of belief is attendance at church. In surveys of churches where attendance is counted a lot fewer go than say they go. Less than 5% of people in Toronto attend church weekly. In the UK is is about 2%. Yet if you ask them...they all go to church with an occasional miss.
So I conclude the need to blend with the group is what compels them to say they attend. In cities it is easier to escape notice. In small towns the religious police actually go around to tell you where the church is and try to get you to go. I know, I have had them knock on the door and ask me what church I belonged to...as if it was their business.
Dumb people believe it, smart people know what is good for them, so they put on the outward apperance of piety, while they deny internally.
There is no other explanation. If they were believing, dog fearing people, they would go to church every week, out of fear or whatever.
I see no religion in futuristic shows like, Start Trek, of course, those are short shows, they even lack toilets.
