Japan's J-Phone to halve planned 2001/02 capex

TOKYO, Jan 11 (Reuters) - J-Phone Co Ltd, the wireless firm operated by Japan Telecom Co Ltd and its parent Vodafone Group Plc (quote from Yahoo! UK & Ireland: VOD.L), said on Friday it would halve its capital spending this business year to 300 billion yen ($2.27 billion).

J-Phone, which is expected to roll out third-generation (3G) services in June, has budgeted hefty capital spending for the year to March to lay networks and beef up its existing infrastructure.

``We announced that we would have a capital expenditure of 600 billion yen (this business year), but we decided to spend less on existing 2G services. But in reality, we have decided to reduce capex to 300 billion yen,'' newly appointed J-Phone President Darryl Green told a news conference.

($1 equals 132.21 yen)
