Well, I think your Rothbard quote is a bit far-fetched... See, the difference between a mere thief/burglar and the State is that the former rips you off without any compensation whereas the state apparatus retrocedes a huge portion of its fiscal/tax income through a panoply of ways: it provides you with a police force that secures your property, with expensive constructions (airports, harbors, highways, railways,...) and, last but not least, the state acts as a political church of sorts, holding its citizenry spellbound with its patriotic exhortations.
