The Yankee Group Forecasts 2002 DSL Revenues at Over $3.3 Billion; With Increased International Activity, the Global DSL Equipment Market Generated Almost $4 Billion by Year-End 2001

BOSTON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Jan. 11, 2002--Over the past year, the DSL equipment market has been under siege. The spectacular collapse of the competitive DSL providers, combined with an enormous buildup by the ILECs, has created a market awash in excess equipment. However, despite these twin challenges, the Yankee Group believes that the DSL equipment market still has a number of rich untapped markets--primarily in the international marketplace, but also in the United States as domestic carriers upgrade remote terminals and replace older platforms.

Matt Davis, program manager for the Yankee Group's E-Networks & Broadband Access research and consulting practice, states, "Established vendors such as Alcatel, Cisco, and Lucent have been joined by Siemens and Marconi to compete in the fiercely competitive landscape that forced Nortel out of the market. This landscape is likely to produce more casualties in an industry-wide shakeout visiting every corner of the DSL industry."

Davis concluded, "While the U.S. market continues to be one of the most important regions for DSL equipment providers, the oversupply in the market has compelled vendors to look for fertile grounds all over the world. The European, Latin American, and Asia-Pacific regions have stimulated DSL shipments, and development is occurring in different regions on different timetables."
