You have to admit you can't blame me for jumping on the 20 year time frame since it worked out so conveniently to support my argument. Now that you've seen that you can spin it both ways maybe its more clear to you that while your experience might be widespread it isn't a given and there can be a significant variation given different 20 year periods. If you are in a business where you are transferred frequently you could find yourself selling long before you build up equity. Real estate has pretty high transaction costs compared to other investments. If you find yourself owning five or more homes in your lifetime that starts to really eat into any return you might have.
