Interesting article on how to handle China and fundamentalism...

Unfortunately, I see that China perceives it has an opportunity to "buy" an alliance with Islamic nations such as Pakistan, which would serve as a foil for US and Indian interests (which remain inextricably opposed).

I only perceive China's involvement in containing Islamis extremism as it relates to their own nation. And by providing Islamic nations an "alternative" to the west, they put themselves in a position to become the favored beneficiary of Mid-East oil, desperately needed for China's economic growth, and something that they cannot permit the West to dominate.

I believe that China was attempting to use Pakistan to create a zone of influence in Central Asia from which they could access energy supplies in the region.

Were I China, that's how I would play it. But they know that extremism is a dangerous tool to play, and one that can "blow back" on them. But the more the US takes the side of India, the more I perceive China supporting Pakistan and other Muslim nations. And garnering favor as the "alternative" to the west, would also put China in good staid in Indonesia, a region vital for its sea lanes which China needs to control to have a reliable supply route for its oil inports.

I remain open to other ideas, of course. But this what I would be looking at were I sitting there looking at my geopolitical maps and planning strategy.
