If you are correct about Arafat, why don't the Israelis just shoot him?

Unfortunately, there is no longer the least doubt about Arafat. Everybody knows it, including even the US State Department (mirabile dictu), but most don't want to say so out loud.

Don't kid me on they can't do that... They seem to be keeping him alive if anything, along with a big show of gunships shooting up his helicopters.

They could do that, and a vocal minority wants to do so very much. What stops them is the price they would have to pay. First in world opinion, and especially in US opinion, the one player they really have to mind. Then, having shot Arafat, they would in effect have taken ownership of the Palestinian political problem, and would have no choice but to reoccupy the territories and try to manage them by force. That prospect is so unappetizing that it stays their hand.
