Tim, Re: "But somewhere in the neighborhood of 30% might be important to give AMD the critical mass to be able to keep up with spending on research and building new fabs."

I don't believe in abstract concepts like critical mass in this situation. I don't think there is a definite line between success and failure. If AMD manages to get more market share, it will help them to make more profits and develop better technology, but such jumps are always temporary. Market share is volatile. While I'll grant that AMD has done quite well in getting to 20% MSS, sustainable for 4 quarters, it would be as easy getting to 30% unless they solidify their OEM partnerships, grow their business both in size and headcount, create better supporting groups such as marketing and support, and have a convincing and executable future roadmap (both in processors and in manufacturing). You simply can't grow in sustainable market share without the infrastructure to support it.

I believe they had their company built for years to support 20%, but only lacked a great product like the Athlon to sustain it. Now they have a great product, but lack the rest of the company infrastructure to sustain another 10% of market share.
