I had a gold (mutual funds actually) position for several months in 2001, but on deep reflection decided that buying gold was essentially a market timing decision and that I am not a market timer. The opportunity cost of owning gold for me was giving up the 25% to 30% annual returns that I have seen in the last 3 years from my other holdings. Gold may well go to the moon, but when, that is the question.
