No, I think you found my point (which I was having trouble finding). Here is the intersection of a belief system and some kind of reality. In the belief system this guy had to take a certain position that did not jive with reality so he had to take a discontinuous jump (or violate the belief system).

I think my interest in the story does not have much to do with you, but with another poster in this thread, NeoCon. He too has a belief system that requires a discontinuous jump when it's bare edges are exposed and some of us find it frustrating. I'm sorry if I projected my ruminations on that subject with your own. All in all I have to find your post reasonable. I think this guy made a defendable decision in his circumstance but that is opinion and not based on more than a superficial understanding on my part.
