CREE got Creemed today on dim out look. Drop 23% to $23.6

================

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Shares in chipmaker Cree Inc. (Nasdaq:CREE - news) fell 23 percent on Friday after the company reported sharply lower quarterly earnings and gave a dim forecast for growth in fiscal 2002 and 2003.

After the market closed on Thursday, Cree said its fiscal second-quarter earnings, before unusual items, totaled $5.8 million, or 8 cents a share, down from $13.9 million, or 18 cents, in the year-earlier period.

Analysts had expected earnings of 9 cents a share, according to research firm Thomson Financial/First Call.

It was the growth outlook that analysts said hurt the stock most on Friday as investors reconciled valuation with the company's lower expectations.
