If you look at the vote totals, I think you'll discover that the the Nazis weren't picking up votes from the SDP, but instead were picking up votes from more right wing parties. But the primary political difference (other than being run by a madman) between the Nazis and the Socialists was the concentration on national vs international. Since the Nazis were both a nationalist and socialist party, it made perfect sense for them to beat up on other nations. In that sense, the Nazis were a heck of a lot worse than the Communists.

I don't know how to distinguish socialists from communists, except in matter of degree and technique of taking power.

Kind of makes you realize how (thankfully) boring our own elections are. It'd be a lot more fun with 3rd parties. We could choose between the Communists, the Nazis, the Taliban, and those guys who wore tennis shoes and designed websites before offing themselves.
