Thank you. I'm extremely familiar with that site. It is a very good one.

"effectively utilizing the Soviets to terminate the war is difficult."

They are trying to terminate the war, but it is difficult.

"in view of the demands of the times it is essential to accomplish this boldly

If we are to get a surrender with "honour" we must piss into the wind.

"Moreover, it is also considered essential in order to strengthen our stand in negotiations against the United States and Great Britain

The Japanese Ambassador honors his job by looking to his country's self interst, and pursuing the best "deal" with the UK and US he can hope to get.

"if only the United States and Great Britain would recognize Japan's honor and existence we would terminate the war

July 17: If they (United States and Britain) will compromise on the unconditional surrender, the war will be over.

"It is extremely important to get Soviet approval quickly"

The situation is desperate. I cannot stress the urgency enough...

"we will stand united as one nation against the enemy if the enemy forcibly demands our unconditional surrender. . It is, however, our intention to achieve, with Soviet assistance, a peace which is not of unconditional nature,"

We will resist unconditional surrender with unity. However, we wish the war to end, if only we can have some concessions.

"Taking into consideration the fact that this matter is a negotiation of the utmost importance which may determine the fate of our country

Newman and Redford getting ready to jump.

An unconditional surrender will leave then entirely at the mercy of occupation forces, and with no rights whatsoever. It may or may not be the end of a nation, the passing out of a people.

BTW, do you know if the US ever gave back the land they took from Japan after the war? How about Russia? I'm just curious. Does anyone know?
