It is 54 mbits/sec. That is what the standard calls for. Of course, the range is really short at that performance level, but it can exceed 802.11b's range when both are at 11mbits/sec.

However, 802.11a is attenuated more by walls and ceilings. Radio is fraught with tradeoffs...
