When you are trying to get legislation in your favor you have to grease many palms. I worked for a natural gas company and they regularly gave money to both parties and had a full time employee who's only job was to be a lobbyist. Funny thing, though, some of the politicians who received money and said they would vote on certain legislation voted the other way after they received the contributions. No honor among thieves, I guess :-)
