Ah, but you missed the article asking why the rats were leaving. Little by little, bailing out. The signs were there. No one noticed till it was too late but a few savvy traders who keep track of this stuff (and I would guess the institutions paid some attention to it). Red flag is executives bailing out (short candidate, something is up).
