Corporate donations to politicians are shake down payments.

The power a politician has in this realm is to write and pass legislation that is detrimental to business interests.

The underlying motive for the corporate heads is more like ..."please don't hurt me" anyone who expects "help" on the basis of campaign contributions is indeed showing signs of desperation...Based on the calls made by Lay in October, I would say he fit that description well.
