I can't believe this. If Bubba were still in charge, the govt would have stepped in and bailed out Enron at an enormous charge (hidden or not) to taxpayers. Of course, the media and demolibs would have cheered, the economy "saved", and the 2002 recovery credited by Brokaw and Rather et al. to Clinton's free-money bailout.

Now we have an administration with scruples and which believes in allowing market forces to work rather than forcing them through intervention. Consistent with this laissez-faire approach, O'Neil told his old buddies who came callin' (including the still well-respected Robert Rubin) that they were out of luck. Imagine that! Government that actually does in private what they preach in public! Bubba is probably disgusted.

And so is the media, apparently. News accounts consistently suggest that Bush "let" Enron fail, and is thus somehow responsible for those folks who put their life savings into a 401K full of Enron stock rather than diversified mutual funds. I would like some lib to explain to me which businesses should be allowed to fail, and which ones should be saved. That would be a fun discussion.
