It is strange that Lee brings the major problem they are going to face (heat dissipation and removal) as just a small unimportant last paragraph. I would say "Remember Trilogy". I also think that he is overplaying the problem of the "huge cost" of silicon real estate. Right now that huge cost is rarely more than 5% of the total chip cost (packaging is much more of a cost than the purest single crystal silicon), often not even 1%. It is quite possible that for relatively simple circuits like memory, that approach may have some merit (programing for redundancy and fault tolerance is much easier than in a CPU, I would think), but once you get into more complex circuits, defects and impurities will have a major impact on yields. Are no these guys those guys that got us Rambus? I wonder if they are selling snake oil for another stock story rather than a product story. (g)
