Excellent question.

an editorial they had published comparing the policies of the Israeli prime minister, Ariel Sharon, to those pursued by Adolf Hitler.

An apt comparison. Sharon may pale next to Hitler in scale, but not so much in philosophy. Bear in mind who Sharon's hero is - Zeev Jabotinsky. Jabotinsky attempted in the 1930s to form an alliance with Nazi Germany, but was rejected by the Germans.
