I have Merriam Webster on my toolbar (Netscape). Another way I make sure I know how to spell a word and what it means is google - if you mis-spell a word usually google will suggest the correct spelling, and usually one of the first links google throws up for an obscure word contains a definition.

When I can't remember a word but only remember the meaning, most of the time google helps there; just punch in the words I do know and see what comes up associated with them. If I get stumped, I call my husband or my mother. Seriously. And if I am really, really stumped, someone on SI can usually help me out - I ask for help on a thread where I think people may know the answer, and so far they've always come through.

It helps to know that you don't know.
