Re: The 512k cache chip Mike listed is a 4-way CPU and AMD's Athlon MP doesn't compete with it

You're mistaken, once again.

Go to this link for roadmap, and you'll see Intel Xeon with 512k cache listed.

Click on the entry for the current chip being replaced by Foster (700/900mhx Xeon) and you'll see several Intel definitions of "Mid-Range Server", one of which is:

front-end servers (1-2 way)

Intel® Pentium® III processor-based servers with 512K L2 cache offer affordable performance and reliability for low-profile, high-density rack-mountable front-end Internet and intranet servers, as well as more traditional mail, file, print, and workgroup needs

Here's what it says about Midrange 4-8 way servers:

Server Performance and Value for Changing Business Demands
Your enterprise systems must depend not only on the total number of processors, but on the power and functionality of each processor. Intel's Pentium III Xeon processors are expressly designed for 4-way, 8-way and higher systems, in application, mid-range and back-end server environments pushing the envelope to the next level of value and performance. Faster processing speeds, larger Advanced Transfer Cache 2 MB (L2 cache) and advanced features provide availability and manageability.

Note that the new 512K "Foster" is slated to replace this chip for dual processor systems. 4-8 way chips from Intel generally have 1 to 2 meg cache. Given P4's architecture, more cache may be needed, certainly not less.

Here's another nice link:

Intel Foster processor. Due early May 2001.
....Two versions. DP (Dual Processor) & MP (Multi-Processor) versions & have SMP-configuation. MP's will have a maximum of 4MB full-speed L3 cache. First DP versions to have 256KB of L2 cache. Intel's i870, ServerWorks Grand Champion & IBM Summit chipsets will support 4 Fosters and support both RDRAM & DDR-SDRAM.
