Tony,
re: John, football, if the Bucs are playing for the coach's job, looks like it's Parcells. I never liked QB Brad Johnson.
Funny thing about Tony Dungy. The man has taken what was a miserable team to the playoff 4 of the past 5 years. I think that's second in the NFC. You can argue that it's the Buc's talent, not Dungy. Who knows? The teams obviously have had offensive problems.
But the intangibles. Tony has class and character, and he teachs that to his players. You don't see Bucs players arrested for beating up strippers. Tony and his players are pretty good role models. OK, some could argue against against a few of the bigger ego's, but the guys are not getting arrested, and most contributing big time in the community. I may get some crap from the anti-PC police, but I think that's especially important for a black coach in a area that has a sizable black population.
So do you sacrifice a Tony Dungy, and his record, and the intangibles that he brings? For a guy who may or may not be a better coach, and who may or may not stick around, and who may or may not continue to provide a couple of dozen great role models for the kids that live in your community?
I think it comes down to what you believe is important in life. One or two more professional football playoff games each year, maybe? Or ...
My vote doesn't count, but my vote is for Tony to stay. And if he doesn't, my congratulations to the city where he lands. It will make your city a slightly better place to live. And it won't be on just a few Sunday's each year.
