HONG KONG (CBS.MW) -- The Hang Seng Index fought to snap a 5-day losing streak on Monday, while other Asian stock markets were mixed as they struggled to shrug off the U.S. Dow's slippage Friday below 10,000 and Fed chairman Alan Greenspan's warning that it's too early to speak of a steady recovery in U.S. and overseas economies.

Tokyo markets were closed for a holiday and trading will resume Tuesday, when the Bank of Japan's policy board starts a two-day meeting. The central bank is not expected to accelerate the easing of monetary policy.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng clawed back from a loss of more than 1 percent in the early going, ending the morning down just 0.1 percent, or 10.89 points, at 11,029.22.
