LG Electronics Unveils Web Fridge for Digital Homes (Update1)
By Alan Patterson

Hong Kong, Jan. 14 (Bloomberg) -- LG Electronics Inc., Korea's second-largest electronics maker, said it's introducing a Web-enabled refrigerator as part of its plan to equip homes with smart appliances.

``As we refine this technology, we envision everything in the house to be tied together through the refrigerator since it's the only appliance on 24 hours a day,'' said Simon Kang, president of LG Electronics' U.S. unit, in a statement distributed by PRNewswire. ``Our vision is to create appliances that go beyond a simple mechanical function.''

LG said the Web refrigerator and other Internet products will be a key part of its strategy for entering the U.S. home-appliance market. The product will go on sale in the U.S. in the fourth quarter of this year.

LG said it was the first company to introduce a Web refrigerator in Korea, complete with a flat-panel display and network connector. The U.S. model will allow users to make videophone calls, watch TV and listen to music on connected devices.

LG Electronics shares were unchanged in recent trading at 30,000 won.
