Thnx. Do you think IBM's disk drive biz will go the way of their PCs? Outsourced except for laptop drives. I seriously doubt that the disk drive operations will survive a Palmisano regime and I don't think it has a chance of catching the others in desktops (~75% of industry unit shipments) and enterprise (~11%). There are also some rumblings on the Yahoo disk drive message boards about some disk drive untouchables being let go in a stealth RIF initiated as a result of IBM's recent decision to buy more disk drives from Seagate, which just posted strong revenues with gross margins near 30% in sharp contrast to IBM Disk Drive which continues to bleed profusely. As you probably know, Seagate may have increased its market share of the enterprise drive market from 45% in 2000 to 50+% in 2001 while Fujitsu also went up from 11% to 20%. IBM may have dropped from 25% to ~15% as a result of its persistent manufacturing yield problems.
