IBM, NEC hike outsourcing to contractors

IBM and NEC are shifting billions of dollars' worth of production over to leading contractors, fulfilling a prophecy by contract manufacturers that OEM outsourcing would be the downturn's silver lining.

IBM has agreed to outsource a significant portion of its desktop PC manufacturing needs to Sanmina-SCI, which will acquire IBM's NetVista desktop manufacturing operations in the United States and Europe. IBM will continue to design and market the NetVista line of desktops and has signed a three-year, $5 billion outsourcing agreement with Sanmina-SCI to provide desktop manufacturing services for these markets.

Japan's NEC Corp. agreed to expand its outsourcing relationship with Celestica Inc. through a five-year supply agreement with total estimated revenue of $2.5 billion.

“The amount of outsourcing is still a very small percentage, in the teens, of the total amount of electronic products produced.” Eugene Polistuk, chairman and CEO, Celestica Inc.
Also last week, Flextronics International announced the pricing of a public offering of 20 million ordinary shares at $25.96 per share under its currently effective shelf registration. Some of the proceeds may go to strategic acquisitions, among other corporate purposes, such as working capital and capital expenditures.
