Bosquedog:

Thanks for your last two posts and the time you took to compose them.

The two 32 RAM chips are located at the end of the four lower chip slots, going to the end of the motherboard. The top two slots are empty. I tried using the original four 8 RAM chips which for some reason only gave the machine 16 RAM instead of 32. Believe these chips were speed rated at 100.

Some years ago I replaced these with 2X32 RAM chips and believe these had the same speed rating. One thing that was curious this weekend. Sometimes the computer, when started, would show 32 Megs of RAM and then would announce memory decrease at startup. Perhaps I am using chips which developed faults over the years? This might be the simplest explanation.

My machine was showing problems years ago. It suddenly had a memory decrease from 80 Megs of RAM to 64 and then some of the programs stopped functioning. The hard drive began to get real noisy. Since this machine could not run some of the stock programs I needed I bought a new Dell XPS T600. Over the holidays I got the bright idea to try and get the old computer going as a backup, to at least get on the Internet. The first thing I did was get a new Seagate 40 Gig hard drive, model ST340810A. This installed easily. I held onto the old drive that came with the Dell XPS 166c.

Is there a way to test the memory chips? I could always get some new ones at Crucial.com. They had 2X32 RAM ones, which cost about 52 bucks several weeks ago. Noticed this when I got another 256 RAM for my T600. Prices were a steal back then. Believe there was a price jump since then. But I digress. The easiest thing would be to try new chips. But it will be best to hold off until I hear from you.

Thanks again.
