So aren't you glad we won?

More than you will ever know.

had an invasion of Japan been necessary, there would have been Canadian bodies on those Japanese beaches

The naval blockade and the heavy mining of Japanese waters were sufficient guarantee that nothing was going in or out of Japan by the water. And the only thing allowed in the air were American bombers.

It is not on the beaches where allied casualties would occur, but in the mountains where the guerrillas hoped to mount their resistance. Such nonsense would indeed cost allied lives: so a diplomatic end to the war as in negotiating the terms of surrender was the practical approach. Who needs dead bodies? It surely doesn't do anything for the happiness of families.
