My guess would be this type of behavior is a form of self-hatred, which of course isn't comfortable and so has to be directed outward at someone else before it hurts the hater too much.

People who are strong, secure, confident and who really like themselves rarely attack or belittle others on a personal level; they have no need to destroy or hurt others-it has no appeal at all. I would guess that the people who attack others (particularly when the others aren't even present!) are those who look in the mirror and don't much like what they see.

This behavior has nothing to do with truth or honesty or who "deserves" it, all of which are justifications used for this type of cruelty. The fact that it is done at all is what is telling. Unhappy children often hit other children.

It's not about you; it's about them.
